How to Plan the Perfect Home Wedding
So you’re planning an at-home wedding?! Congratulations!
Home weddings are some of my favorite things to photograph. I love the intimate atmosphere and everything that comes along with it. The vibe, the decor, the entire transformation is absolutely captivating to me.
Planning an at-home wedding comes with a lot of stress and attention to detail. From a photographer’s perspective, I wanted to share with you my personal, favorite tips on how to plan the perfect wedding in the comfort of your own home.
Home Wedding Tip: Have a Weather Plan
I look at it this way – if it rains on your wedding day, it is known to be good luck! So no need to get down if the weather is less than perfect. However, that doesn’t mean that your wedding should be ruined by a drop of rain.
It’s important to have a backup plan in case you have to move inside or adjust your space. You could prepare an indoor setup if it comes down to it, or order a sail shade just in case there is a light drizzle. Either way, having a weather plan that is completely thought-through and ready to be executed is absolutely essential to an at-home wedding. It is better to be safe than sorry!
Home Wedding Tip: Embrace Intimacy
Some people get nervous about standing up in front of their friends and family and declaring their love for someone. Home weddings are much more intimate, which usually means there will be less people attending.
Embrace this! You will be celebrating your big day in the comfort of your own home with the ones that mean the most to you. It’s totally normal to be nervous at first. At the end of the day, you’ll be glad you said yes to a home wedding.
Don’t forget to include elements of your home and personal style in the planning. Have smaller dining tables to eat at, a small live band for entertainment, friends, and family who give personal speeches, etc.
Providing a comfortable, familial atmosphere will transform your wedding vibe into something so authentic and unique for everyone in attendance!
Home Wedding Tip: Create a Theme that Highlights Your Home
Try to highlight all of the unique elements that exist in and outside of your home. Match this theme to the flowers you order, the decor you choose, and the food that is catered. This will create a perfect wedding vibe that totally comes together.
Home Wedding Tip: Get Creative With Your Space
Hang lights from trees, create a sitting area with your furniture, or have your patio reserved strictly for dancing. With whatever layout you decide, it is so important to make sure that you are working with every aspect of your space to create a fun, easy to navigate setting for you and your guests.
Plan the Logistics or Hire a Wedding Planner To Help
I cannot stress enough how important this last home wedding tip is. Think through the details!
- Do you need port-a-potties?
- Is there enough parking near your home?
- Do you have signs to direct your guests from the street?
- Do you have enough extension cords to set up lights, stereos, etc.?
- Do you have enough places to sit, like chairs, couches, etc.? Do you need to rent furniture?
- Do you have a wedding photographer that will capture your big day?
Of course, you could always hire a wedding planner to assist you with these tasks so that none of the finer details go unnoticed. It may take a village to plan the perfect wedding, but there is no shame in asking for a bit of help!
